Washington, D.C.
– USAction
and its online project, TrueMajority.org today embraced U.S. Rep.
Barney Frank’s call for significant cuts to obsolete weapons systems –a
direction that stands in sharp contrast to eight years of George W.
Bush’s bloated and wasteful military budgets.
“Money is policy,” said TrueMajority.org Director Matt Holland.
“Unfortunately, for too long now our policy and our tax dollars have
favored often obsolete and unnecessary weapons systems over the
critical needs of the people. We need an honest and objective
assessment of what constitutes true security in this country. Is it
jobs? Health care? Homes safe from foreclosure? Or is it weapons
systems that increasingly are compromising our ability to invest in our
families and communities?”
On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Barney Frank is expected to call for a 25 percent
cut in military spending. He is expected to make his presentation at a
panel and press conference scheduled for 10 a.m. in Room 2128 Rayburn
House Office Building. TrueMajority’s 700,000 members have launched a
campaign to scrutinize military spending – and to support President
Obama’s call to cut programs that don’t work, starting with waste in
the Pentagon.
Holland said the exact size of the military budget cut is not as
important as the point Congressman Frank is making – that government
programs must be scrutinized not in terms of their size but rather
their sensibility. “The Cold War ended decades ago, but the campaign to
turn our country and our economy around has just begun,” he said.
