USACTION ON BUDGET DEAL: PROGRESSIVES STOOD UP TO EXTREMISM, WILL RAISE THEIR VOICES UNTIL THERE’S AN ECONOMY THAT WORKS FOR ALL OF US

Washington, DC — Today, USAction released a statement from its Executive Director Fred Azcarate on the budget deal signed into law this morning:

“This week, USAction affiliates and members in dozens of cities across the country delivered a message at the doors of Republican Members of Congress: Enough is enough. Cease and desist from holding our country hostage with self-serving, extremist demands. Re-open the government and pay our bills to avoid a default crisis. From Charleston, WV to Spokane, WA and from Lewiston, ME to Springfield, MO, we sent a clear message that progressives are energized, unified and ready to take on the extremists who tried to shut down our country and slash Social Security and Medicare.”

“Today, we can be grateful that our government is once again open and our potential for disaster has been temporarily averted, and that citizen’s voices played an important role during this time of national crisis. Progressives worked together like never before to stand up to the hostage-takers and make Congress hear from the people who were being hurt by their actions.”

“But our work isn’t done. The real crisis is the lack of jobs and an economy that works for all of us. We will continue to oppose Republican manufactured budget crises and make sure we defend critical programs like Social Security, Medicare and the Affordable Care Act. Just as we did this week, we’ll raise our voices until we know Congress hears—and does the right thing.”
