This is how we cut the Pentagon budget. Barney Frank for U.S. Senate!

After John Kerry is confirmed as Secretary of State, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick must appoint an interim Senator until a special election can be held at a later date. With major budget battles looming in the coming months, who better to appoint than progressive champion Barney Frank who can hit the ground running right from day one?

Click here to tell Governor Patrick: Barney Frank for U.S. Senate!

Barney Frank, who just recently retired after serving in the House of Representatives for 32 years, fought to cut wasteful Pentagon spending and protect Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits. In particular, he spent his final few weeks in office crusading against the bloated Pentagon budget, delivering an impassioned plea to oppose the $633 billion defense spending bill on multiple grounds.1

During the budget showdown, Congress pushed back $1 trillion in spending cuts for an additional two months. If we’re successful, this could be our best chance to cut the waste from the Pentagon budget. But if we fail, important programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, along with discretionary domestic programs such as Head Start, job training and education are all on the chopping block.

With so much at stake, Barney is the perfect choice to serve the people of Massachusetts into this budget fight. And fellow Senator Elizabeth Warren agrees, who just this week said Barney would be an “extraordinary” option for the Senate seat.2

While Governor Patrick has not indicated a preference for an appointee, he has indicated that Barney Frank is on the short list.3 But there are other candidates being considered, and Barney can deliver on reshaping the Pentagon budget like no one else. With his extensive experience on the Hill and his familiarity with the intricacies of the budget negotiations already, we think picking Barney would be a no-brainer.

Confirmation hearings to appoint John Kerry are coming soon and Governor Patrick could announce his appointment at any time, so we need to put the pressure on now. Click here to sign the petition urging Governor Deval Patrick to appoint Barney Frank to serve as Massachusetts’ interim Senator.
