UPDATE: This morning, Gov. Deval Patrick appointed Mo Cowan to serve as interim Senator until a special election can be held in June. Previously serving as Patrick’s Chief of Staff, Cowan will be the second African American to represent the state of Massachusetts in the Senate. And his appointment will mark the first time two African Americans served in the Senate at the same time.
After John Kerry is confirmed as Secretary of State, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick must appoint an interim Senator until a special election can be held at a later date. With major budget battles looming in the coming months, who better to appoint than progressive champion Barney Frank, who can hit the ground running right from day one?
Momentum is building to encourage MA Governor Deval Patrick to appoint former Rep. Barney Frank to the U.S. Senate, who is expected to make a decision as early as tomorrow! In a joint action with the Daily Kos, 37,404 USAction members signed our petition to Governor Patrick, along with 40,711 Daily Kos members. That means over 78,000 people took action to appoint Barney to the U.S. Senate!
Barney Frank, who just recently retired after serving in the House of Representatives for 32 years, fought to rein in wasteful Pentagon spending and protect Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits from cuts. In particular, he spent his final few weeks in office crusading against the bloated Pentagon budget, delivering an impassioned plea to oppose the $633 billion defense spending bill on multiple grounds.1
During the budget showdown, Congress pushed back $1 trillion in spending cuts for an additional two months. If we’re successful, this could be our best chance to rein in wasteful Pentagon spending. But if we fail, important programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, along with discretionary domestic programs such as Head Start, job training and education are all on the chopping block.
With so much at stake, Barney is the perfect choice to serve the people of Massachusetts into this budget fight. And fellow Senator Elizabeth Warren agrees, who was recently quoted saying Barney would be an “extraordinary” option for the Massachusetts Senate seat.2
With his extensive experience on the Hill and his familiarity with the intricacies of the budget negotiations already, we think picking Barney would be a no-brainer.
Governor Deval Patrick: Please Appoint Barney Frank to the U.S. Senate!
