Citizen Action of New York held press conferences across the state yesterday talking about the role of campaign contributions in the fight to raise the minimum wage in New York and the need for Fair Elections. The 1% can no longer be allowed to spend tons of money to buy the policies they want while New York’s hard-working families are ignored. That’s not how a democracy works.
Check out their recap of the events here: Minimum Wage Opponents Highlight Why We Need Fair Elections
As long as the current campaign finance system is in place, the Legislature is free to ignore the will of the people who support both an increase in the minimum wage and Fair Elections. Monied interests are using the current system to buy the policies they want and the rest of New York’s hard-working families are left by the wayside. This is not what democracy is. With the legislative session coming to a close, it’s time for the State Legislature to act now.

Penn Action is fighting back against predatory pay day lending:
The bill to allow predatory Pay Day lending passed the PA House with only 6 votes to spare. Now it moves to the Senate.
The lobbyists for the payday lenders were swarming the Capitol yesterday and will be again today. We need to assume that the lenders may try to fast track HB 2191 as it was in the House. Our best chance to slow and stop this bill is to put on a full court press and continue to create controversy around this bill for the next two weeks, before summer recess.
Please take a moment to do two things:
1. Sign our petition at SignOn.org: Stop Pay Day Lending from Coming to PA
We’ll be delivering signatures to your state Senators’ Harriburg offices during a lobby day on June 19. Click here to join us!
2. Call and email your state Senator today. You can take that action by clicking here. Sincere thanks to all who have already make the call.
Missouri Pro-Vote is fighting back against the war on women with allies NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri:
Last week, Gov. Jay Nixon received an anti-choice bill that could allow a boss to deny birth-control coverage and other critical health-care coverage to his employees. We need the Governor to stand up for ALL Missourians and VETO SB749!!
ProgressOhio is collecting health care stories and preparing for the Supreme Court ruling on the Affordable Care Act:
Show your support of the Health Care Law by sharing your health care story and/or join the Healthy Stories Express Rapid Response Team!
Two Ways You Can Help:
The media need to hear from everyday people like yourself as to how the federal health care law has helped them. Please take a moment to write down your story to share it with us.
Hear breaking news of the Supreme Court Ruling and to attend a Rally near you the day after the ruling is released.
If you sign up we will contact you with details of a rally near you that will be held at a pre-set time and location the day after (whichever day that is) the ruling is released.
If the law is upheld, we’ll celebrate the benefits of the ACA that thousands of Ohioans can count on. If part or all of the law is overturned, we’ll take action to spotlight the influence that the 1% has on the Supreme Court and make sure decision-makers hear loud and clear that Ohioans still need affordable health care and we won’t stop fighting for it.
See you when the Supreme Court rules.
