The U.S. Supreme Court has spoken. The legal debate over health care reform is over.

This landmark law, passed after progressives and Presidents tried for 100 years to do health care reform right, expands coverage to 30 million people and eliminates the worst insurance company abuses for those of us with coverage. It stops insurance companies from denying our care and jacking up our rates whenever they please. It puts us well on the way to quality, affordable health care for all.

I’m Ross Daniels of West Des Moines, Iowa.

I’d like you to know what today’s Supreme Court decision on health care means to me.

A year ago, my wife Amy and I went on vacation. We visited the Boundary Waters in Minnesota. One afternoon, Amy tipped her kayak and swallowed a small mouthful of lake water.

She didn’t know it then, but she had been exposed to a fungus common to rural Minnesota and other northern states. The fungus doesn’t affect most people – maybe one in 100,000.

Amy got sick. Far, far sicker than most. Within days of being admitted to the hospital, she was placed on a ventilator as her lungs broke down. Her kidneys failed and she received dialysis. The fungus had spread throughout her body and she was given a one-in-three chance of survival.

Today Amy is recuperating and just had her fourth surgery, but will require more still.

And there’s more good news. Because USAction members like yourself fought for health care reform, my family did not have to file for bankruptcy. We did not lose our house, our retirement savings, everything.

You see, before health care reform passed, Amy’s insurance plan had a $1 million cap on lifetime benefits. But her medical costs have far exceeded that.

I’m writing to ask you for your help. Republicans in Congress will do everything they can to roll back health care reform in the weeks and months ahead.

But we’ll fight back every step of the way. Donate $5 now so we can continue to make quality, truly affordable health care a reality for all.

Right now, USAction affiliates are hosting rallies in 19 states responding to the Supreme Court decision. They’re lifting up the stories of USAction members who have benefited from the ACA. Stories like Amy’s and mine.

Because the ACA isn’t about corporate profits or the free market. It’s about our right to live the best, healthiest life we can.

I promise you that USAction will continue the fight with us to make health care a right for everyone. They’ll continue to work in their 21 affiliate states to implement the rest of the Affordable Care Act, defend Medicare and Medicaid and hold the GOP accountable for their reckless pursuit of a country of, by and for the top 1% and corporations.

Your donation keeps organizers on the ground pushing for implementation of state health exchanges. Battling attempts by right-wing governors and state legislators to undermine the ACA. Rallying against the destructive Ryan Republican budget. Setting the record straight on health care.

If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for your children and your grandchildren.

Do it for Amy.

We must remember why we fight. We may have won this battle, but the war continues.

Donate $5 now so we can continue to defend the Affordable Care Act until we truly have affordable health care for all.

Sincerely,
Ross Daniels
